Also we assume that he is able to calculate longer variations and is trained to do so for more than 10 minutes if necessary. Wait, do I really need 10 minutes for every puzzle? No, relax. All chapters start with easy puzzles but the level of difficulty increases and depending on your skills you will need sometimes more than 20 minutes, sometimes you probably won´t even find the solution. We included some brain crushers from whom we think that even grandmasters will have problems solving. But that should not pose a problem. In our opinion the journey is the reward. Sometimes looking at a position for a long time and then finding something new you couldn't spot in the beginning, might be even more beneficial. The harder you try, the more you will benefit. We experienced from working with the book at home, it takes a lot of discipline, but we are certain that with a regular practice your calculation skills will improve a lot. Another good method is to train with a partner of similar strength or in a group. We used examples from the book in our own training sessions and think it will be very useful for chess coaches who are in need of new material for their pupils.

If not stated otherwise directly at the diagram or in the chapter introduction, every puzzle has a single best move as the solution. This move usually leads anywhere between a small and a big advantage and is not necessarily clearly winning. There are also a few puzzles that are marked with (=). In these puzzles your task is to find the only continuation that holds the balance. You will also find some puzzles marked with a (*). We think these puzzles are very deep and rather complicated. If you want, you can test your calculating abilities and spend a lot of time on these very rich positions or you can see them as practical puzzles, where the first move is the most important one to find, but you can't be sure about the consequences completely.

Our idea how to use the book optimally is the following. Take your time for every puzzle. Set up a chessboard, put up the position and then solve it without too much time pressure. Writing down your ideas is probably a good idea, especially if you plan to solve multiple puzzles in a row. In a lot of these positions there are many interesting ideas to discover, so try not to rush through the puzzles. The book is roughly planned to contain one year of calculation training (There will be a new puzzle book at the start of next year!). This is of course not the only way to use the book and we are sure you'll enjoy reading it regardless of your training methods.

About the Authors
Georgios Souleidis (1972) is an International Master and has a Master Degree in Communication Science. The major diff erence between
middlegame and endgame training is, of course, the limited material
on the board. This means the patterns you discover in training are much
more likely to appear in your games — so you should try to imprint them
somewhere in your memory!

With ordinary tactics, the purpose of exercises is almost solely to improve
your calculation skills. There is
a lot to learn from studying each solution, even if you failed to fi nd it yourself;
this is why answers here are even more detailed than in Volume One.
Nevertheless, the solutions are always concrete.

This book contains 10 chapters. In his well known style, Sokolov focuses on the different aspects of the complex middlegame.

In modern chess practice, the theory of the opening often stretches into the middlegame, sometimes quite deeply. He also offers some ideas on the theory of the different openings.

The 30 games in this book cover a wide range of different middlegame types, so there is something for everyone. Perunovic wanted therefor to present a completely new approach for Black. The Benko Gambit has been an unpopular choice since the computer isn’t too happy to lose a pawn unless absolutely necessary.

When he started playing the Benko 10 years ago, it was a very good choice for open tournaments and weaker opponents, since it leads to an active game for Black. In time, he started using it against strong players as well, and came to realise that the opening was entirely applicable at even top levels. There is a secret danger for White: so long as White is up a pawn, the computer claims an advantage, but in practice it is very difficult for humans to make use of this theoretical advantage.

The book presents a repertoire for Black after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5. Perunovics aim is to offer the essential variations and themes for Black, both in terms of concrete variations and conceptual ideas. In his opinion, the only way for White to test the Benko is to accept the gambit, the main line of this book.

In this line he suggests 6...Bg7 instead of 6...Ba6, an idea which he came while analysing the opening with friend and a lifelong Benko Gambit player, GM Danilo Milanovic. After the ‘…Bg7’ move, entirely non-standard positions for the Benko may surface giving way to new motives for Black. Following White’s lengthy wandering, he believes the best continuation with ‘7.a7‘ has been found, after which very complicated positions arise, and Black has to show very precise skills to stay in the game. The ‘…Bg7’ variation became popular, Vladimir Kramnik used the ‘…Bg7’ variant earlier this year. Certainly, the ‘…Ba6’ variant is another possibility that is currently suffering because of the ‘e4 variation’, but Black has still some resources available to fight back, after all this is a ‘Fighters Repertoire’!

With this book, Perunovic wants to revitalise the Benko and show that, although the computer isn’t that happy with Black’s positions in certain lines, his resources are impressive, especially in ‘THE PRACTICAL GAME’, because White will face many difficulties and Black’s counter attacks, no matter how well prepared he is.

ISBN:

9789492510211, 164 pages, paperback, Thinkers Publishing

Download PDF sample of this book
Crucial Chess Skills for the Club Player Volume 1 - Robert Ris
Crucial Chess Skills for the Club Player Volume 1
by Robert Ris

Crucial Chess Skills for the Club Player is split into three parts: Endgame, Tactical Play and Middlegame Strategy.

The endgame part of the book mostly concentrates on rook endgames. However, this is exactly how most beginners start learning chess nowadays.

Some strong Grandmasters also fall into this trap when they prioritize opening theory ahead of other aspects of the game. this often leads to fundamental gaps in one's chess understanding, a deficit that is really hard to fix, especially for young players. Ipatov's ideology is based on the belief that one should work on enhancing one's general chess understanding and take a surprise-first approach when it comes to playing openings. The aim is to avoid opponents' preparation in the mainstream theory and take them out of book in the early stages of the game.

Most of the book is comprised of Ipatov's original analyses covering a variety of offbeat opening lines from Black's perspective. His recent game against the 2018 US Chess Champion Sam Shankland, where Ipatov implemented a novelty on move two - something unheard of in the modern era - serves as a good illustration that the philosophy deserves more attention and research than it currently receives. This book serves to fill this gap and stimulate more debate on the subject. Volume 2, covering offbeat opening ideas for White, will be published later in 2019.

Alexander Ipatov is a Ukrainian-born Turkish chess Grandmaster. He won the national championship twice (2014, 2015) and played in the Turkish national team in three World Chess Olympiads (2012, 2014, 2016), two European Team Chess Championships (2013, 2015) and one World Team Chess Championships (2013). He also contested two World Cups (2013, 2015). Alexander won the World U-20 Junior Chess Championship in 2012 and claimed the silver medal in the same competition the following year. The nature of the Scotch fitted perfectly into the 19th century era of Romantic chess – the opening’s emphasis on opening lines, fast development, rapid centralisation and, most importantly, fast attacking chances, meshed seamlessly with the style of the day. In a stylistic sense the Scotch very much resembles Open Sicilian positions.

In spite of its long history however, for most of its life the Scotch did not enjoy great popularity. It was a recognized answer to 1… e5, for sure, but it never seriously challenged the Ruy Lopez as the most “objective” way to fight for an opening advantage. The general opinion was that Black had enough resources to achieve equality. The turning point for the fortunes of the Scotch was the world title matchbetween Kasparov and Karpov in 1990, the first time that the opening had been tested at such an elite level. Unsurprisingly, Kasparov’s decision to employ this old opening meant that its appearances in tournaments soared. The popularity of the Scotch generated by this match remains today, and I would say it is perhaps more popular than ever before. That begs the obvious question – why? Well, due to the nature of the positions that tend to arise it is ideal for engine analysis, and so it lends itself perfectly to the tools of the current day. It is a nice paradox that the Romantic foundations of this opening merge so well with the computerized modern era. Credit can mostly be given to Kasparov for reviving this old opening, but there are many others who have contributed to exploring new ideas and forging new paths. A lot of discoveries have been made by some young grandmasters who don’t shy away from analysing deep tactical solutions with the aid of the silicon beast.

The only other book written on the Scotch that I used whilst searching for material is the excellent work by the English GM Peter Wells, The Scotch Game. Wells’ book comes from an older, classical style of opening literature which is helpful in developing the reader’s understanding and certainly still has its merits today. Since its publication in 1998, however, many new lines have been introduced and our general approach to the Scotch has changed dramatically. Nevertheless, it served me well as guidance as I wrote this work. This book is going to be a big one, so my introduction will be a little different to my usual approach. I will try to present the most important features in the book so that readers can immediately see what kind of material they will find.

View PDF Sample

Paperback | Pages: 280 | ISBN: 9789492510648

The Richter Rauzer Reborn: The Kozul Variation - Kozul & Jankovic
The Richter Rauzer Reborn: The Kozul Variation
by Zdenko Kozul & Alozije Jankovic

Four years have passed since the first edition of our Richter-Rauzer Reborn book and if we look at the recent past, we can see that this variation of the Sicilian has been gaining more and more popularity and is very often seen in tournament practice. The fact that this opening has become part of a standard repertoire against 1.e4 for many top players such as Rapport, Dubov, Li Chao, Korobov, Gupta, Vovk etc . speaks for itself about the quality and the fascination of the variation and also about the many possibilities it offers. It’s hard to pinpoint the real reasons for this popularity, but it’s likely that the answer lies in the complexity of the positions that arise on the board and the large number of new ideas, which we will talk about in this book.

Exactly that was a motive and an additional impulse for GM Alojzije Jankovic and myself to write this new material on the Richter-Rauzer as an update to our first book. The basic idea of the book is to give an overview of theoretical novelties and new ideas in the positions we have already dealt with, and also to give you some new lines and suggestions that may be particularly interesting to players who are in the process of creating a repertoire for Black. In particular, I would like to point out the fact that our variation could be seen in games of the world’s best players such as Fabiano Caruana and the World Champion himself, Magnus Carlsen, which makes us proud. It is a great recommendation and boost for this opening so in the book we have especially considered the games of the World Champion Carlsen and his 2018 challenger, Caruana.

In the main lines, the new position that we analyse is the one that arises when White instead of 12.Nxc6 plays 12.Nce2. It is in this line that we can see some new and very original ideas, for example when White plays 13.h4!?. Although in that line we are often mixing with already known positions, there are some positions when new posibilities and new plans are emerging. The same goes for 10.Nf3.

As for the known positions we have already analysed, we have tried to bring a complete overview of all the latest ideas and theoretical news from tournament practice. As might be expected, practical games have brought many new ideas and different ways of treating certain positions. It was certainly very interesting to see the Anand-Carlsen game in which the World Champion showed a completely new way of playing with Black! It should be said that some positions have endured the test of tournament combat, but there are also positions in which White players have found ways to increase the pressure, so then we needed to look for additional ideas and analyses as to how to react as Black.

ISBN 9789492510624, Paperback, 398 pages, Thinkers Publishing

VIEW PDF SAMPLE HERE
The Modernized Berlin Wall Defense by Priyadharshan Kannappan

This book’s journey began on the first day of January 2018 when one of my New Year resolutions was to write a chess book. The journey has been very long, but certainly fun, and has in many ways made me understand myself better, both as a person and as a chess player!

If it has taken a long time, you also have to know the distance the book has covered! It has travelled 14,130 km, as the first page was written when I was about to complete my Master’s degree at Webster University in St Louis in the USA, and now, as I write my preface, I am a full-time chess trainer, currently living in Bengaluru, India.

So how did I fall in love with this beautiful Berlin Defense? In mid-2003, when I was preparing for the World U-10 Championship, I found that my Philidor Defense wasn’t good enough to be played in a tournament of such stature, and my coach at the time, IM Raja Ravi Sekhar, suggested the Berlin to me as it was at the peak of its popularity after the 2001 World Championship match between Kasparov and Kramnik.

The Berlin was a good fit for me then, as it didn’t have extensive theory (unlike now!) and the lines given in ECO were simple and easy to remember, which made me very happy, as I never really enjoyed memorising moves in the opening.

Since then, the Berlin has been my go-to, rain or shine opening against 1.e4, and has given me the chance to play a whole bunch of memorable games against players of all rating levels. An incident that is still fresh in my mind happened in the World U-16 Championship in 2009, when I was paired against an opponent who was 200 points lower rated than me. I was scared to play the Berlin as I thought he might hold me to a draw, but my coach, GM R.B. Ramesh, told me to go and play it confidently, and the result was a 31-move victory!

The Berlin Defense has had a significant impact on my chess career, as it made me a positional player who would happily exchange queens in the firm belief of outplaying his opponents in practical endgames. The Berlin has made me enjoy these endgames and has had a huge impact on my playing style.

When I set out to write this book, I was clear on certain aspects, like keeping the moves simple and giving as much explanation as possible at the critical moments, as I wanted to ensure that someone interested in learning the intricacies of the Berlin doesn’t get swamped by long theoretical lines, but acquires a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the positions. If you manage to grasp the dynamics of these lines, then you can play not just the systems recommended in the book, but also other popular Berlin variations that have not been covered in this book for the Black side.
~ GM Priyadharshan Kannappan

ISBN 9789492510662, Paperback, 216 pages, Thinkers Publishing

VIEW PDF SAMPLE HERE
The Modernized Delayed Benoni by Ivan Ivanisevic

My aim in this book is to show that the Delayed Benoni is equally as attractive as its cousin, the Modern Benoni. For some reason – perhaps because “Modern” sounds more exciting than “Delayed”? – my favorite Benoni has been neglected for years, receiving scant coverage in chess publications.

The advantage of “our” Benoni is based on a waiting approach. Black would like to choose a perfect moment to play …e6xd5, waiting for White to adopt some piece setup that turns out to be inconvenient for him after this exchange. At the same time, we would like to avoid some dangerous or deeply explored variations like the Flick-Knife (a.k.a Taimanov) or systems where White can place his bishop on the optimal f4-square.

A lot of variations in this book can also be useful for King’s Indian players, as a main or alternative way to play. My own journey in the world of the Delayed Benoni started when I was a King’s Indian kind of guy!

As every rose has its thorn, so White can annoy us by answering our …e6xd5 not with the routine c4xd5 but rather with e4xd5. This produces a completely different pawn formation, with an open e-file. White enjoys a space advantage but Black has his chances. And just as White can depart from the well-trodden path with e4xd5, so Black can dispense with the almost automatic …e6xd5 and instead play …e6-e5, producing a sort of King’s Indian formation. In the Main Line, covered in Chapter 4,
White has already played h2-h3 and this pawn can become a target when Black gets his kingside attack moving.

Our opponent can force us into a Modern Benoni, by playing f3 (Sämisch) or f4 (Four Pawns). I think that I have succeeded defending Black’s case, even finding some important nuances improving on the existing theory.

From my personal experience, the only way for White to achieve some advantage is the h3 and Bd3 variation with e4xd5, the Main Variation covered in Chapter 4. The problem for White, though, is that Black can answer that line in many different ways. So White must be thoroughly prepared and acquainted with all the nuances of our system. And even then, White’s advantage is just a “normal” one.

I give a different approach to this variation, three (!) different ways for Black to respond. The reader can also, through the game commentaries, see the development of the variation in my practice.

In my opinion, the Delayed Benoni is a kind of mystery for White also, since it has not been covered deeply enough in chess publications. So I think that this work could be useful for White players, too.

ISBN 9789492510655, Paperback, 240 pages, Thinkers Publishing

VIEW PDF SAMPLE HERE
