NEW IN CHESSBASE ’26:

Opening report
- Club players need statistics that are different from top players. Prepare for your level, not for GMs. Opening books reflect main stream theory and often suggest lines that are not practical for normal players.
- Top players instantly see the latest fashion and the statistics for various move orders.
- Understand the typical variations with their strategic themes and frequent plans.
- Train by looking at selected instructive games.
- Solve the typical tactical motives - this is revolutionary for opening training and great fun.

More power with remote engine
now with 4 CPUs – free with a ChessBase Premium Account – and much more.*

New Reference filters
- Instant preparation: Just type the name.
- Filter out Blitz and rapid with one click

New detection of duplicate games.
- Ten times faster and much more precise. Database maintenance has never been easier

Monte Carlo Analysis
- An engine evaluation is a single number. Monte Carlo provides additional insights into a position. Practical chances, drawing width, typical manoeuvres.

AI description of plans
- Explains a position to you like a good personal trainer would do it. (Valuable insights, but beware of hallucinations which are still possible).

Real time ray tracing
- The ray tracing 3D boards have become ultra fast and reach high resolution within seconds.

Good, but not Great!

Having had old versions of Chessbase in the past, I decided it was time to splash out on an upgrade. I am still finding my way around the new version, but even at this early stage I am finding some annoying quirks that haven't been ironed out in this latest iteration.
If you have a large database of several million games, carrying out searches can take some time, even after a search booster has been created. By contrast, the free programme, SCID, can perform a search on a similar sized database in a matter of seconds.
When you open a database it defaults to the games list, but there are several tabs above it, the first of which is text associated with the database. When you have created the database yourself, all this page will show is the file path and the message that there is no guiding text associated with the database. It would seem logical that you might wish to add some text of your own. I have not found a way to do this. There is no mention of it in CB help, and I have been unable to find any information via a web search. It might be possible, but it isn't much help if the instruction is non existent or buried somewhere inaccessible.
I have seen criticism of Chessbase, that it is buggy and already I have encountered runtime errors, which makes me nervous about losing work, and finding myself saving frequently.
There is a lot to like about this software. It has a pleasing graphic interface, a plethora of functions, analysis and reports. It is just let down by a few niggles that you wouldn't expect for the asking price.
