An excellent way of putting the social into social chess. Perfect for chess clubs, schools and fun casual meet-ups!

Three-way chess is a chess variant for three players invented by George R. Dekle Sr. in 1984. The game is played on a circular board comprising 96 quadrilateral cells. Each player controls a standard army of chess pieces.

The board has a diameter of 65cm and is made of a fabric-backed vinyl making it easy to keep clean. The pieces are made from plastic and are the traditional "gambit" piece design. King height 95mm (3.75").

The set includes a black canvas carry-case making it easy to carry around.

The picture of the set shows the starting setup; each player's queen is placed to the left of their king. One player is designated as White and moves first, play then proceeds clockwise around the board. Pieces move the same as they do in regular chess, with some special features described below. Standard chess rules apply including castling, a pawn's initial two-step option, en passant, and promotion. The first player to checkmate an opponent wins and ends the game.

Special move features
- A queen or bishop moving along a long diagonal will change square colors when crossing the center of the board.
- A king pawn or queen pawn on its fourth rank has three diagonally forward ways to capture. A pawn always captures to a square of the same color.
- A pawn that reaches its fifth rank gains the ability to move orthogonally in any direction, and to capture diagonally in any direction. However, it may not reenter its home one-third portion of the board.
- A pawn has three possible promotion ranks: the back ranks of either opponent, and the furthest rank directly opposite the player.

3-Way Chess:- Grandchildren are good at seeing around chessboard corners

I once made a hexagonal chess board and found it popular at the school chess clubs I used to run. My two young grandsons liked to play chess with me but arguments could ensue with who was to play me first! 3-way Chess seemed an ideal solution and also another way to impress the upcoming generation by the skills built up over 60 years of chess playing. My young teenage granddaughter and her father got in first and soon worked out that their combined cunning could round up my king and checkmate me by attacking from two sides! A few days later I had recovered sufficiently to take on my primary school two grandsons. (Reception & Year 3). Three colour chess pieces were a hit. While the older still worked away as though he was on a normal chess board the younger revealed an ability (and enjoyment) in seeing round corners and whipping off a few of my unsuspecting pieces. Once most pieces were off the board and the extra Queens came into action the lads ganged up and gleefully captured my shaking king.
Great family fun .... and good exercise for young minds learning to develop their imagination and work together to out wit a grandparent.
PS perhaps a warning should be attached to this item. 'Senior citizens may suffer unexpected mental shocks when using this item with the younger generation'.
