A Snapshot of Chess History

Every year that I tuck away a digital version of the annual Chess Magazine collection, I add another piece of history to my Chess collection. Being digital, it is of course instantly searchable, and as the years pass, one can see the rise (and fall) of the world's top chess players. The magazine also features fascinating social and political moments of history - witness, for example, the impact of the war in Ukraine on the welcome afforded to Russian players and problemists; the effect of COVID-19 on OTB play; the growth of online play, chess streaming channels, chess engines, chessbots and AI; the famous Netflix 'Queen's Gambit Effect'; the love/hate relationship with FIDE; cheating scandals that make national headlines and much more. All chronicled within these pages over the years and fascinating to read with hindsight.
The PGN archive loads flawlessly (I use Hiarcs on a Mac) and even for woodpushers like me it is still instructive to watch high level games unfold - every game now giving the ability for one to play 'guess the next move'. Buy this year's collection - and then go back and add all the other years to your basket as well.
