Description

My Great Predecessors Part 5 by Garry Kasparov

This book, the fifth in Garry Kasparov's magnificent history of the World Chess Championship, focuses on the great rivalry between Viktor Korchnoi and Anatoly Karpov. Between 1974 and 1981 Korchnoi and Karpov contested three matches, two of these being directly for the world title. Over the years they have played a total of over 100 games against each other. Many of their battles are recognized as some of the greatest games of the modern era.

Viktor Korchnoi was a chess legend, and one of the greatest players never to have become world champion. His career began in the 1940's and he maintained a hunger for battle and remained a fearsonme competitor in high-level international events well into the 21st century.

Anatoly Karpov gained the right to challenge Bobby Fischer for the world title by winning through the Candidates series in 1974, defeating Korchnoi in the final. As is well known, Fischer refused to defend the title and in 1975 Karpov became champion by default. Although he did not have to contest a Championship match to gain the title, Karpov proved that he was a worthy champion by winning virtually every major tournament over the next decade.

In this book, a must for all serious chessplayers, Kasparov analyses deeply the greatest games of both Korchnoi and Karpov, and assesses the legacy of these great chess geniuses.
