The Center Game by Arne Moll
A Perfectly Playable Chess Opening Surprise

The Center Game is a wonderful opening for club players. White starts with a center push, develops quickly, looks for opposite castling, and launches an attack. The setup will feel very familiar to you in no time. And the chess engines show that this opening is both sound and correct, and at least as good as the over-analyzed Ruy Lopez and Italian Opening.

With this opening, you'll get a middlegame position that you know very well, but quite often will be new to Black. This will probably guarantee you an advantage on the clock, which will further increase your winning chances.

The author, Arne Moll, is an experienced club player, chess writer and chess book reviewer, so he knows exactly what the reader needs: the historical context, the basic strategic ideas of each line, the tactical patterns that will emerge, and some inspiring model games by great players such as Ian Nepomniatchi and Arjun Erigaisi —who uses the Center Game as a surprise weapon

Arne Moll is an experienced club and tournament player with a peak rating well above 2200. He was a chess writer for the legendary blog Chess Vibes and Chess.com and has reviewed dozens of chess books. He lives in Amsterdam and works as an IT and Data specialist in the Finance industry.

The Center Game

Really interesting take on an old line with a mix of old and new ideas. Whilst it might not be my main defence as white I will certainly include it in my repertoire as a opportunity to surprise my opponent.

The Centre Game is not the Ruy Lopez!

The cover blurb states that "...this opening is sound and correct and a good alternative for the over-analysed Ruy Lopez and Italian Opening". But only just! Unlike the other two openings mentioned, this is not a steady opening against which it is hard to equalise fully,
For players of the black pieces who know what they are doing, the book shows that it is very easy to equalise and, if White tries the main gambit line (1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.Qxd4 Nc6 4.Qe3 Nf6 5.Nc3 Bb4 6.Bd2 0-0 7.0-0-0 Re8 8.Qg3), it can be all too easy for Black to gain a clear advantage.
However... I have played this opening exactly thirty times over more than a dozen years. Only three opponents knew enough to gain a clear edge against the gambit. Only one beat me, and I scored a win and a draw against the other two, both of whom were 2100-2200 players similar to me. My other two losses (yes, only a total of three losses in thirty games!) were because my opponents (both of whom out-rated me) found their way through the complexities of level positions better than I did.
The refuted lines are still worth playing, if your games are not in the databases, since few players will prepare thoroughly for an opening that they will rarely face. In any case, there are safer alternatives for White.
My overall score with the Centre Game is more than 70%, so I can recommend it to enterprising players. Moll explains well what you need to know to play it, including, crucially, White's main plans, so I can recommend this book too.
